Iridium's Test Your Satellite Phone Week (May 23-29, 2010)
Encourages Satellite Phone Users to Be Prepared for Response, Relief and Recovery Operations in the Wake of Disasters.

European Datacomm, a service partner of Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:IRDM), is participating in the company’s annual “Test Your Satellite Phone” Week initiative, which reminds users to make sure their satellite phones are ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

“Your Satellite phone provides a critical lifeline.  Make sure that it’s ready to assist you when you need it most. Now’s a good time to verify your satellite phone batteries are fully charged and your phones are working properly, and that you review operating procedures for making and receiving satellite calls,” said Paul Lacroix, Sr. sales manger satellite communications at European Datacomm.

“We welcome European Datacomm’s participation in this important annual public service program,” said Don Thoma, executive vice president, marketing, for Iridium. “Thousands of first responders, emergency relief and recovery workers, and organizations with international operations depend on Iridium satellite phones for vital communications in the aftermath of natural and manmade disasters, and it’s vitally important that they be fully prepared before disasters strike.”

Iridium subscribers can call a toll-free call-in number (00-1-480-752-5105) from their satellite phones to verify they are working properly.  Callers will hear a recorded voice message confirming their calls were completed successfully and offering refresher tips for using the phone.

European Datacomm participates in worldwide VELP+ CONTAINER MONITORING PROJECT

21/04/2010

European Datacomm is proud to be a partner in the VELP+ Worlwide Container Monitoring project announced by VIL (Vlaams Instituut voor de Logistiek/Flanders Institute for Logistics), April 20, 2010. EDC76 CSD tracking & tracing technology and satellite data communications services are used to send data from the container to the VELP+ platform.

A FIRST FOR FLANDERS: WORLDWIDE CONTAINER MONITORING THANKS TO VELP+

ANTWERP – On Tuesday the 20th of April, the first vessel left the port of Durban (South Africa) with on board the first full container which can be monitored flawlessly, until reaching the place of destination, thanks to a device attached to it. This corridor was set up in cooperation with Toyota Motor Europe and Customs to test the VeLP+ platform, the Flanders e-Logistics Platform, in real time. This will give Flemish ports a competitive advantage because containers with green light will no longer be checked, which means time will be gained.

VIL began developing the Proof of Concept (POC) for the VeLP+ Platform in October 2008. The VeLP+ Platform is an open and neutral communications platform to track containers and to manage the related information flows, in terms of both security and container content, and the related services.

The aim of this breakthrough project is to make container transport more reliable, more efficient, safer and faster and in that way, making Flanders more ‘attractive’.

The VeLP+ Platform helps Flanders to position itself as a key region for implementing Secured Trade Lanes through the innovative use of tracking & tracing technology. A Container Security Device (CSD) is attached to the container. The CSD sends information via satellite to the VeLP+ Platform on the location and integrity/status of the container.

In the VeLP+ Platform, this information is linked to the content of the container. This information is dispatched to the various parties in the chain, with the customs being the most important party.

Noël Colpin, General Administrator of Customs and Excise with the Federal public service Finance, supports this VIL project completely: “VeLP+ is a source of information for all parties in the chain and helps to simplify customs procedures.”

The VeLP+ POC has now entered the real-life test phase. A Toyota container, equipped with a CSD, left the port of Durban (South Africa) this morning. Over the next four weeks, until arrival at the Toyota Parts Centre Europe at Diest, it will be tested and followed. Via the VeLP+ Platform, the location of the containers and their content can be located in real time, the status of the CSD’s can be checked (is the seal intact or broken) and it can be determined whether the containers have been opened, with or without authorisation. The VeLP+ Platform also shows all of the steps/events in the trip, both those in the past and those expected in the future.

An important feature is that these tests are the first practical tests of the so-called ‘green lanes’. In a green lane, customs gives the cargo a green light from the moment the container is loaded until it arrives at its final destination. That means that the goods flow will not be stopped for a customs check, which will save a lot of time. The basis of these green lanes are agreements between the Belgian and South African Customs (South African Revenue Service - SARS) authorities. The support of SARS in this project turned out to be crucial in putting up the corridor.

SMART-CM guarantees Container Visibility and Security with the provision of Information Neutrality

31/03/2010

The SMART-CM platform has, since October 2009, established fully operational connections with three different container security technology providers, thus materializing the single window concept in container tracking just one year after the project’s start. What is more, by combining information derived from the Container Security Status Devices and the Entry Summary Declaration on consignment data, through its foreseen ICS-SEAP service, the SMART-CM platform becomes a one-stop shop solution for communicating ENS declarations to EU customs. The customs import control clearance processes are thus accelerated.

Three Container Security Technology providers from three different continents are now interoperable with the Neutral Layer of the SMART-CM platform:
European satellite based provider EUROPEAN DATACOMM (also a partner to the project), US satellite based GLOBALTRAK, and finally, the Chinese RFID based China International Marine Containers Ltd (CIMC). Logistics partners are able to access information on container security status and location via one single point, the SMARTCM platform, regardless of the security technology that each container has been equipped with.
Container location can be visualized on global maps of the SMART-CM Logistics Visibility Layer. The Value Added Services (VAS) of the platform are demonstrated during the 2nd phase of the real world demonstration activity of the project started in November 2009. Via the geo-fencing capability of the VAS, arrival to or departure from major ports are mile stoned. Deviations from expected values of the Transportation Plan result in alarm messages to the interested parties.

While the transportation plan is being adhered to, the Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) is calculated and is currently available to both the Terminal Operator of the destination port and the Freight Forwarder. If the transportation plan cannot be executed as it is, the SMART-CM platform will provide the transportation re-scheduling capability through the implementation of Advanced Value Added Services at a next stage. A new Estimated Time of Arrival will be calculated as soon as a new schedule is decided and accepted.
By being technology independent, the SMART-CM platform brings a whole host of benefits to Customs authorities especially in relation to fulfilling security requirements and certification schemes (AEO, Green Lane, Single Window, and electronic Customs clearance among others) that demand global trading compliance systems and information management. By having access to real time data regarding the status and location of containers through the SMART-CM Neutral Layer information gateway, customs are able to perform effectively and efficiently transaction based cargo risk management.

The neutrality of the information will also be guaranteed with the formation of a Neutral organization, which fosters open membership and which will administer the SMART-CM platform. This process is under development within the SMART-CM consortium and the first release of the organisation mission and structure is now available for discussion with external to SMART-CM bodies.
